W. Edward Fening, 64, of Middletown, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 11, 2024 at Atrium Medical Center. He was born in Middletown on July 31, 1959, one of ten children of parents, Dr. Walter E. and Wanda L. (Lewis) Fening.

Ed graduated from Fenwick High School in 1977. He attended Wright State University and went on to earn his Nursing Degree from Miami University School of Nursing and his Bachelor's Degree in Nurse Anesthesia from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.. Ed had a wonderful career as a Nurse Anesthetist, having worked in Virginia for nearly 30 years, and then, after coming back home to Ohio, he worked at Atrium Medical Center and finally at Upper Valley Medical Center, from where he retired. He was a member of Holy Family Parish.

Ed was beloved by everyone who knew him. He will be remembered for many things, including his generosity of spirit, warmth, and certainly his wonderful sense of humor. He had numerous and varied interests, such as his love of music, Brothers Weekends, Civil War history, and the mysteries of the cosmos. Ed so enjoyed spending time amidst the beauty of nature. He was fortunate to have traveled extensively throughout his life, especially enjoying the vast deserts, moon- and Milky Way- views and majestic mountains of the Western United States, along with most of the National Parks.

Ed had a kind heart and he loved his family as well as his extended family. He will be greatly missed by his loving partner of 15 years, Beth Gough Hurst; his sons, Rick Robertson, Sam Fening and Nick (Holly) Fening; daughters, Liz Fening, Sarah (Rob) Watson and Rachel (Luke Zimmerman) Fening; grandchildren, Richie & Ethan Robertson, Jack Fening, Emma, Piper, Scout, Reagan & Parker Watson and Henry Fening; great grandson, Theo Fening; Beth's children, Lauren (Dan Fibiger) Hurst and Cameron (Reena Dalal) Hurst; and grandchildren, Neve & Kai Fibiger and Sunny & Miles Hurst. He is also survived by his brothers, Tim (Linda Kovalchik) Fening, Mike (Suzanne) Fening and Brady (Shannon) Fening; sisters, Diane Fening, Tracy Fening and Lara (Greg) Fening Moore; sister-in-law, Liz Fening; brother-in-law, Rick Fishbaugh; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Fening; sister, Sherry Fishbaugh; brother, Chris Fening; and grandson, Braden Fening.

Visitation will be Friday, March 15, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd (at Bonita Dr.), Middletown. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Parish - Holy Trinity Church, 201 Clark St., Middletown, with Father John Civille as celebrant. Interment will follow at Woodside Cemetery and Arboretum.
