Obituary

On Monday evening, August 14, 2023, Donald Calvin Saylor, died peacefully in his home with his family around him. He had been receiving Hospice care for the last five months for advanced lung cancer. Don was born in Middletown, Ohio, in 1925, to Joseph Saylor and Martha (Hounchell) Saylor. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Freda (Hayes) Saylor, whom passed away in 2013; parents; three brothers Edward, Frank and Fred Saylor; three sisters Mary (Blanton) Saylor, Wilma (Robinson) Saylor, Margaret (Hassett) Saylor and his grandson, Matthew Thomas, whom died suddenly in April 2023. He is survived by his three children Donna (Tom) Thomas, Stephen Saylor, Bradley (Heather) Saylor; four grandsons Brian (Jana) Thomas, Drew, Connor and Thomas Saylor; two great grandchildren Curtis and Clara Thomas. Don joined the United States Navy as a 17 year old to fight for his country in WWII. He served as a radarman on the CVL-25 aircraft carrier, the USS Cowpens. He remained in the Naval Reserve after WWII and was called into active duty during the Korean War. Don was a member of the MHS Class of 1943 and retired from Armco Steel Company after 34 years of service. He was a member of the Armco Veterans Club. Don was a 50+ year member of The First Baptist Church of Middletown, Ohio as well as a 50+ year member of the Jefferson Lodge Masonic Organization. He was a member of The Scottish Rite and Antioch Temple Shrine of Dayton, Ohio. Don was a member of the Middletown American Legion, Post 218. The highlight of Don's retirement years was to attend the annual "Mighty Moo" festival in Cowpens, South Carolina. This event is held each year as a naval reunion to celebrate and honor the men who served on the USS Cowpens. Don was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather to his family. He was a steadfast and loyal friend to those who knew and loved him. He will be missed. A visitation will take place at Baker-Stevens-Parramore Funeral Home, 6850 Roosevelt Ave Middletown, Ohio 45005 on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 from 4:00pm-6:00pm Funeral Service will be at First Baptist Church, 4500 Riverview Ave Middletown, Ohio 45042 on Friday, August 25, 2023 at 10:00am. Burial will take place at Woodside Cemetery.
